The CrossFit Games is the final of three events in the CrossFit Games season, and the most elite competition in the sport of CrossFit. This year was meant to be the first year of the new CrossFit Games season structure. With the season starting off with the Open in October, followed by 28 sanctional events throughout the year, and the games as the final event in August of 2021. However, the season took a swift turn due to a number of reasons, mainly due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Below you’ll find out about how the 2020 CrossFit Games season panned out, and a list of all of the 2020 CrossFit Games winners.
CrossFit Open
The season starts out with the CrossFit Open as the first competition. The Open is an event which anyone over 14 years old in the world can participate in. The registration and cost is $20 per participant. Each participant makes a video recording of them completing each workout and submits their scores for five workouts over five weeks. There is a single workout each week (20.1, 20.2, 20.3, 20.4, 20.5) and participants get to try the workout as many times as they want in the week long period to submit the best score possible.
It’s a cool event because of its democracy. Each participant enters their results into a public database on the CrossFit website. Therefore each participant can see how they stack up against all other participants in the world. By the end of the event, the top man and woman from the CrossFit Open will earn a spot to the CrossFit Games. Also, the top 20 men and women worldwide will rise to the top of the leaderboard and automatically qualify to participate at the CrossFit Games.
Congratulations to the National champions and winners of the 2020 CrossFit Open, Patrick Vellner who won the men’s individual competition and Ragnheiður Sara Sigmundsdottir who won the woman’s individual.
CrossFit Sanctionals
The CrossFit Sanctioned events are now the second pathway for top men, women and team athletes to receive invitations to the Games. This year was meant to be the second year to see CrossFit Sanctional events in the CrossFit Games season. The season would span the globe with 28 events in 21 different countries on six continents. Each Sanctional event is a separate event, and are now the only direct pathway for teams to compete at the CrossFit Games. The goal of the Sanctionals is for male and female individual athletes and teams to take first place and earn an invitation to compete at the CrossFit Games. Winners of the Sanctional events do not have to compete in The Open, but are incentivized to participate for improving their ranking at the CrossFit Games. In 2020 these sanctioned events were meant to occur from November 2019 to October 2020.
Unfortunately due to the COVID-19 pandemic things took a turn for the worst, and all but 10 Sanctionals were able to go ahead. These are the sanctioned events that took place for the 2020 CrossFit Games season:
- CrossFit Filthy 150: Dublin, Ireland – Nov 22 – 24, 2019
- Pandaland CrossFit Challenge: Chengdu, China – Dec 7 – 8, 2019
- Dubai CrossFit Championship: Dubai, UAE – Dec 11 – 14, 2019
- CrossFit Mayhem Classic: Tennessee, USA – Jan 10 – 14, 2020
- CrossFit Strength in Depth: London, UK – Jan 24 -26, 2020

- Australia CrossFit Championship: QLD, Australia – Mar 5 – 8, 2020
- Brazil CrossFit Championship: Sao Paulo, Brazil – Mar 6 – 8, 2020
Congratulations to all of the winners from each of these Sanctioned events. Unfortunately due to the COVID-19 pandemic all of the winners of these events were not invited to participate in the 2020 CrossFit Games this year.
CrossFit Games
The CrossFit Games is to the sport of CrossFit what the Superbowl is to the sport of football. This is the final event in the CrossFit Games series and in the past, after 3 days of grueling competition, one individual man, woman, and team are crowned the 2020 Fittest on Earth. This year we were meant to see hundreds of CrossFit Games athletes compete from more than 100 different countries.
However, this year was an unprecedented year for CrossFit.Inc, when CEO Greg Glassman made a very controversial statement, which highlighted many underlying issues within CrossFit, Inc that came to head and needed to be accounted for. Shortly after many HQ staff quit, affiliates de-affiliated and athletes withdrew from the 2020 CrossFit Games. Because of this Greg Glassman stepped down and retired as CEO, and shortly after the 100% purchase of CrossFit, Inc was made by Eric Roza. Eric became the official new owner and CEO of CrossFit, Inc in July, 2020. Due to this new sale, we saw many changes and HQ staff, affiliates and athletes re-affiliated with CrossFit, Inc. The Games would also go on, but they would now only showcase the individual athletes, seeing teams, masters and teen competitions all cancelled. Plus, there would be a new format for the final stage of the 2020 CrossFit Games.
The 2020 CrossFit Games – Stage 1
Stage 1 of the 2020 CrossFit Games became an online event which included the top 30 men and 30 women who were invited to compete in their homes or local gyms in one of 16 different countries. The top 5 men and women from Stage 1 would earn a spot in the final five of Stage 2, and the final in-person event at The Ranch in Aromas, Northern California. This innovative new format was to help protect the safety of athletes, while delivering a world-class Games experience to identify the world’s fittest individuals.
“The world is dealing with an unprecedented crisis. After extensive discussions with athletes and public health officials, we decided that this format was the best way to preserve the spirit and substance of the Games and ensure athletes can compete for the title of Fittest on Earth in a safe and fair manner.” – Dave Castro, CrossFit Director of Sport.
Due to travel restrictions and circumstances beyond control, the dates for the 2020 Reebok CrossFit Games were adjusted, and Stage 1 was 2 days of competition and took place September 18 – 19th, 2020.
