There were not just beasts all round lurking in the Masters competition, but this year we saw five former individual CrossFit Games competitors in the 35-44 Women division. Samantha Briggs was a surprise competitor in the 35-39 Masters Women division after having to withdraw from Regional competition because she had to have surgery for a fractured joint and ruptured medial ligament in her elbow. However, before she had surgery she didn't just complete all four online qualifier workouts, but she was able to complete them all back to back IN THE SAME DAY! 2018 CrossFit Games Teens AGOQ
What happened at the Teens Age Group Online Qualifier (AGOQ)? These international youth and teens performed four workouts and were not only fantastic for their division, but some of the best across all divisions on the online qualifier. In the 14-15 year girls division Olivia Sulek won 3 of the 4 workouts in her division, and finished first on the podium by just one point over Lea Malo. These two will be ones to watch in Madison at the CrossFit Games. The 14-15 year boys division was a very different story, with Tudor Magda running away with the competition. Magda not only won all 4 qualifying events, but he also finished first in the Open. He is the only person in any division to do that. So far he's performed perfectly, can he be stopped, or will he have a home run at the 2018 CrossFit Games? 2018 CrossFit Games Pacific Regional
What happened at the Pacific Regional? Reigning Fittest on Earth 2017 champion Tia-Clair Toomey edged out Kara Saunders for the first time at Regionals by just 30 points. Tia-Clair Toomey had an outstanding performance over the weekend and took first place in Event 1, 2 & 6 and second place in Event 3, 4 & 5. She also broke Event 6 record on the final day. Kara Saunders was hot on Tia-Clair's heels all weekend, taking first place in Event 4 & 5 and second place in Event 2 & 6. Kara also broke an Event 5 record on the final day. For the second straight year James Newbury runs away with the top spot on the leaderboard, dominating from the opening event at the Pacific Regional. He took first place in Event 1, 2 & 4, and second place in Event 5. He wins first place overall by 100 points. 2018 CrossFit Games West Regional
What happened at the first ever West Regional? Emily Abbott took the West by storm, and was good for the show, being the only woman finishing above 500 points. Taking first place in Event 2 and 6, we sure thought she earnt her number 1 spot on top of the podium. This would of been Emily's 5th consecutive CrossFit Games appearance, however in light of recent drug testing, she will not be competing at the Games this year due to her disqualification for breach of the CrossFit drug policy. Brent Fikowski was the guy everyone expected to win and showed us that he was more than the endurance guy. He wasn't on top of the leaderboard as early as we thought he would be, he pulled back in Event 1 but he struck where he needed to later in the weekend. 2018 CrossFit Games Central Regional
What happened at the Central Regional? Traditionally Central Regional has been one of the most competitive in the world. Their was a clear favorite, two time Fittest Man on Earth, Mat Fraser in the individual men's competition, but nonetheless their was a good fight on the competition floor all weekend. Drew Wayman was the first over the finish line in Event 1, with Mat Fraser finishing 9th. Drew is yet to secure a qualifying spot at the Games, so we hope to see him throw down again next CrossFit Games season. After Event 1 Mat Fraser turned the tables and went on to take 5 consecutive back to back wins in Event 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6. It was his career Regional event win number sixteen to twenty. And in doing so he also broke three consecutive records and is now five time Regional champion, the first person ever to do that in the sport of CrossFit. 2018 CrossFit Games Meridian Regional
What happened at the Meridian Regional? Their was no shortage of action and excitement at the Meridian Regional. Lukas Esslinger was the fourth favorite coming into the weekend. His rope climbs were solid in Event 6, which won him his first career event win and a repeat trip to the Games for a third year in a row. Elliot Simmonds won Event 1 in 2017, and started out strong with a repeat in 2018. He also went on to win first place in Event 5. Jess Towl had a new Event 1 record with her time of 39:28. Jamie Greene's was one of the most dominant performances in Regional history, and the weekend could not go any better for her. She sprinted down the floor first in her heat taking second place in Event 1, and then again in Event 2 and 5. And took first place in Event 3, 4 and 6. No-one could catch Greene this weekend. What happened at the Atlantic Regional? It was all about Cassidy Lance-McWherter and Emily Bridgers going head to head and fighting their way to each event's finish line. Ben Smith made a tremendous comeback in Event 5 and 6. This is Ben's 10th consecutive individual CrossFit Games! Alec Smith was hot on his brothers heals in Event 1. And he didn't stop there. These brothers mean business! Noah Ohlsen cycled that barbell like no-one was watching. Ethan Helbeig fought hard for his place at the 2018 CrossFit Games. 2018 CrossFit Games Latin America Regional
What happened at the Latin America Regional? The Latin America Regional did not start out to plan. But the CrossFit community rallied and worked together to make this Regional happen. Because of a truck strike in Brazil the CrossFit community had to come together to source and supply all the equipment needed for the Regionals to go on. Talk about a test of what can be achieved with a strong and dedicated CrossFit community. Only one woman, one man and one team from the Latin America Regional were to head to the 2018 CrossFit Games. It was an exciting weekend to see who would be those lucky Top 1 qualifiers. Luis Perez and Simona Quintana finished strong taking first place in Event 1. Brenda Castro is the three time Fittest Woman in Mexico and the favorite coming in to Regionals, with a less than ideal start to the weekend, she rebounded nicely. What happened at the South Regional? Sean Sweeney started out slick on his squat cleans, taking out first place in Event 2. He then finished strong taking first place in Event 6, and first place overall on the podium. Alexis Johnson had an outstanding performance in Event 2 taking the win. Brandon Luckett took the win for Event 3 and 4. This is Luckett's fifth appearance at Regionals, and his third Top 10 finish. Three time CrossFit Games individual athlete Rogelio Gamboa took Event 4 and second place on the podium. Colleen Fotsch tried to turn things around, winning both Events 4 and 5. Margaux Alvarez put in a solid effort and pushed hard all weekend to take first place overall on the podium. Camille Leblanc-Bazinet is back! What happened at the Europe Regional? Gabriela Migala, at just 19 years of age, shocked the world when she won Event 1 in her one event career. Andrey Ganin couldn't put on a better performance, taking first place in Event 2 and 5. This would of been Ganin's 1st CrossFit Games appearance, however in light of recent drug testing, he will not be competing at the Games this year due to his disqualification for breach of the CrossFit drug policy. Watch out for Adrian Mundwiler's comeback. In his second year of CrossFit, Adrian qualified for the 2016 CrossFit Games.
